Meet Our Executive Board

President
Dr. Samantha Sedgwick, DVM

Dr. Samantha Sedgwick grew up riding horses in the US Virgin Islands, on the lovely island of St. Croix. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science at the University of Tennessee while participating in two division I sports: track and rowing. Dr. Sedgwick went on to attain her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ross University in 2015. Following graduation, Dr. Sedgwick completed her rotating internship at the world-renowned Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, where she honed her anesthesia and analgesia skills under the tutelage of the eminent equine anesthesiologist, Dr. John Hubbell. Her love of anesthesia spurred her pursuit of a residency in the Section of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at Cornell University Hospital for Animals, which she completed in 2021. During her residency, Dr. Sedgwick published work on blood pressure monitoring and alveolar recruitment using critical care ventilators, both in canine patients; she also co-authored a chapter on regional anesthesia for the textbook Equine Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Her clinical interests include pain management, regional anesthesia, stabilization of polytraumas under anesthesia, and the challenge of exotic zoo wildlife anesthesia. In her spare time, Dr. Sedgwick enjoys spending time hiking with her husband and riding her two horses, Lu and Sea B.

Vice President
Dr. Jane Vermeulen, B.Sc (Agr), DVM, MPA

Dr. Vermeulen joins us from the west coast of Canada and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Her education is varied and includes a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) and a Master of Public Administration. She is a small animal practitioner who has worked in emergency, specialty, and general practices with an interest in feline medicine, dermatology, nutrition, and practice management. She spent part of her career in veterinary nutrition, including positions with Royal Canin Canada and Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets. She is the founder of Vets for Pets Victoria, a non-profit organization that provides free preventative veterinary care to the pets of homeless and low-income pet owners in downtown Victoria. In March 2018, she was recognized nationally as a L’Oréal Paris Canada Woman of Worth for her dedication to helping pets and strengthening the bond between pet parents and their pets. In her spare time, she spends time with her family and enjoys exploring new areas and local coffee shops.

Treasurer
Dr. Ashley Barton, DVM, CVA, DACVAA

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Barton obtained her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 2009.  She went on to complete a rotating internship at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in 2010. In 2013, she completed her residency in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia at Cornell University and obtained her certification in Veterinary Acupuncture from the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida. Dr. Barton achieved her Board Certification from the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia in 2014. She is also a graduate of Options for Animals, College of Animal Chiropractic in 2019, and is certified by the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association. Dr. Barton was awarded a scholarship for her acupuncture training in 2013, 2012 Clinical Resident of the Year Award and first place award from the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia for her research in 2013.

Dr. Barton’s goal is to offer the most comprehensive pain management and rehabilitation protocols, individually tailored to each pet’s needs. Throughout her training in the tried-and-true eastern medicine techniques and the newest, most advanced western medicine practices, Dr. Barton offers a full range of treatment of pain management and rehabilitation options for pets in pain. Services offered through the pain management clinic include underwater treadmill, cold laser therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, acupuncture, chiropractic care, electric stimulation, steroid epidurals, platelet rich plasma injections, at home and in-clinic physiotherapy exercises and extracorporal shock wave therapy. Dr. Barton also offers peace of mind to owners whose pets are having surgery from the most elective surgeries to critical emergency surgeries employing the most recent advances in locoregional anesthesia and nerve blocks for surgical patients, MAC sparing techniques, direct blood pressure monitoring, blood gas analysis and critical care post operatively.

Kendra Bohn, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)

Dr. Kendra Bohn received a bachelor’s degree from Hiram College in 2002, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from The Ohio State University in 2007. She completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Auburn University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. She then finished an internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in 2009. Dr. Bohn went on to complete a residency in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery from 2009 to 2012 at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. During her residency, she conducted a research project evaluating the utility of magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which is a specific MRI sequence, in non-invasively differentiating brain tumor types. In 2012, Dr. Bohn became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of neurology. She worked for nearly 7 years at PVSEC in Pittsburgh, PA before joining CVETS in July 2019. Her clinical interests include neurosurgery, brain tumors, and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. Aside from her love of neurology, Dr. Bohn enjoys horseback riding, Japanese language and culture, hiking, yoga, and reading.
